Being an artist is like a magnificent obsession which never goes away,  - that of capturing the moment, the here and now, the incessant subtleties of the always changing sea and sky.  The sea, in motion and never still even on the calmest day holds for me the poetry of T S Eliot's Dry Salvages - the third of his four Quartets - whose words inspire me still.

We all observe daily natural scenes - the sudden shaft of light piercing through clouds, or a reflection on water, or a glorious cloud combination - but even in our observation the scene changes just as rapidly, just as quickly the moment is lost  and will never be the same again. The challenge is to capture the restless moodiness and power of nature in a way that is enabled by the technique. In my sea paintings, I use the waves to move the pigments, my only use of a paint brush is to help soak the canvas before I begin!
